Our goal is to enhance the user experience of booking accomodation as a group. Currently, only individuals can book accomodation and encourage their friends or colleagues to pay them back after payment is made. We'd like to make it easier for groups of people to split the cost of an Airbnb when travelling together

From this problem statement, our idea was to explore a feature that made it easier for users to share a simple breakdown of debts with their fellow guests, which would make it easier to get repaid swiftly.

To accommodate for bookings where some guests are staying for different periods, we wanted to also include the ability to split the bill based on nights stayed.
We created Lo-Fi wirefrmaes, using the existing ‘Manage payments’ page in Airbnb to launch a new ‘Manage debts’ page which showed the cost breakdown, and ability to split the bill evenly or by nights.
Problem Statement
Problem Statement
Airbnb users that make group bookings want to be able to easily make or manage payments without ending up out of pocket.
However, the current system requires one individual to pay the full amount. This process often results in inconveniences, as users end up having to chase others to settle up.

The objective here was to collect sentiments around the group bookings process on Airbnb, as well as understand how potential improvements would affect business outcomes, such as user engagement and booking frequency.

Chasing payments
Respondent 17
In my experience, generally it has not been challenging to manage/recoup payments - however in some cases I have had to chase individuals for money over a month or longer which puts me out of pocket.
Respondent 3
We have to pay with one card but that means I’m waiting on different payments throughout the year if I pay in instalments.
Respondent 8
But it isn’t SEAMLESS - sometimes you do have to follow up with people and check.
Managing Booking
Respondent 17
Sharing potential Airbnb’s with a group could be easier - it usually comes down to spamming group chats with Airbnb links and it takes a ling time to coordinate a decision between a group.
Respondent 5
With the recent changes, sometimes is difficult to find the information about the booking.
Respondent 3
Inviting other Airbnb accounts to manage the booking.
Our final prototype shows the user a popup explaining the new feature, before they navigate to the Manage Debts page.

Question examples
If the users approve the breakdown, they can easily share it with their group to improve swift repayment.
What went well
What went well
We feel our feature provides a simple solution to the problems we were having, by providing a simple and quick way to enable repayment from a group.
We chose to avoid more complex features, involving payment collection from multiple users, or bank detail input, as we felt these would be more difficult to get approval on, and added extra risk/compliance factors. We felt this made our feature easier to get prioritised.
Our usability testing was successful with 100% direct success rates on all of our key tasks.
What could be improved
What could be improved
In hindsight, we could have done more to stay aligned to our initial problem statement. We felt, that the addition of the ‘Split by Nights’ feature was useful but not directly related to the problem statement.
We received some good feedback suggesting that it would make sense to introduce this flow directly after a booking is made, rather than as a retrospective flow.
Usability testing showed that users often have a reflexive reaction to close pop-up notifications without fully engaging with the content. This behaviour suggests that the current method of presenting information via immediate pop-ups might not be the most effective way to communicate with users.
