Research & User Stories

Research & User Stories

Before designing the new feature for PlanRadar, I started with in-depth research on existing messenger apps to understand best practices and user expectations. My goal was to identify how different platforms handle essential messaging functionalities and apply those insights to our use case.

To ensure a user-centered approach, I created detailed user stories, such as:
"As a user, I want to be able to see shared files easily, so I can quickly access important documents without scrolling through messages."

Wireframing: Defining the Chat Experience

Wireframing: Defining the Chat Experience

Building on my research insights, I created mid-to-high fidelity wireframes for both web and mobile to visualize how the chat feature would integrate into PlanRadar’s interface. These wireframes focused on usability and clarity, ensuring a seamless messaging experience for users.

  • Group Chats – Enable users to collaborate efficiently within teams

  • Shared Files – A dedicated section for quick access to uploaded documents

  • Search Function – Allows users to find previous messages easily

By designing in higher fidelity, I was able to refine UI components, layout, and interactions early in the process, making it easier to gather feedback and iterate before moving into prototyping.

Integrating Chat into the Journal Feature

Integrating Chat into the Journal Feature

After exploring various possibilities for the new chat feature, the team decided to integrate it into PlanRadar’s existing Journal feature rather than creating a standalone messaging system. This approach ensured a more seamless experience within the platform while maintaining existing workflows.

My work on the chat concept was not lost - I was able to take the key features I designed and adapt them to fit within the Journal. This integration allowed users to communicate more efficiently while keeping all project-related discussions and documentation in one place.

Bulletin board: The Next Challenge

Bulletin board: The Next Challenge

After working on the chat feature, I moved on to my next project: designing the Bulletin board feature for PlanRadar. This feature aimed to provide a clear and structured way for teams to share important updates, announcements, and notes within the platform.

My role in this project involved researching similar systems, defining user needs, and creating wireframes that ensured an accessible experience. Just like with the chat feature, my focus was on seamless integration into PlanRadar’s existing workflow while enhancing collaboration and communication for users.

This next chapter of my internship allowed me to apply my UX skills in a different context, balancing clarity, usability, and business goals in a new feature.

Conclusion

Conclusion

During my internship at PlanRadar, I gained valuable insights into how a well-established company approaches design and product development. Working within an existing design system allowed me to deepen my understanding of consistency, scalability, and user-centered decision-making.

One of the key takeaways from this experience was the importance of iteration. Design is an evolving process, and new ideas or solutions can emerge at any stage. Adapting to these changes and refining concepts based on feedback is a natural and essential part of creating great user experiences.

Overall, this internship not only strengthened my UX skills but also gave me a deeper appreciation for collaborative design and problem-solving in a real-world environment.
